By Ken Wyandot

When you look at the beer industry, you will see that there is stiff competition between the large cooperate giants such as Budweiser and the microbreweries. With the small breweries having only a 5% share of the market, they are indeed finding it quite difficult to compete. The giants hold nearly 80% of the liquor market in the USA, and the remaining portion is made up of wines and spirits. It is easy to understand the advantage the giants have; for example they have large budgets for advertising campaigns. As a consumer, this does not necessarily mean that you should always choose them.

However, in a turn of the tables, in the last decade, microbreweries have been making progress and they are indeed gaining in popularity. This is because people like to be more adventurous in their tastes, and this of course means trying a large selection of beers such as some foreign tastes. The corperate giants are known for bland beers.

Microbreweries cannot afford these huge advertising campaigns, but what they can afford is to produce some great tasting, unique beers, and they are a far cry from the weak lagers you see advertised by the large macro beer producers. Of course the microbreweries do not have the ability to produce the beer at low costs, as it is not a mass produced. Unfortunately, the competition between the giants and the small companies is not always as healthy as it should be, and it has been known to get nasty.

In order to successfully sell a small beer, then you need to brew it, distribute it, and then it needs to make it s way to the retailer. The trouble that the small brewer comes across is that it does not have access to the larger distribution networks, as Coors, Miller or Busch, will not transport any beer that is not their own. This market condition makes it hard for the small company to make a go of things, and this does discourage many microbreweries.

Thankfully the beer market is changing, and it is easier these days to be a microbrewer. So, if you are wondering just why the macro beer brands dominate the market, then now you will understand why. But the population of the USA really is starting to appreciate other beers with new and interesting tastes, and gradually there is more and more room on the shelf for these contenders. Next time you go out to buy some beer, stop and think about the process that has allowed the beer to reach the shelf, and perhaps you will decide to support your local microbreweries and sample some new tastes.

I found this article on history.com of all places. It is a fun and good read. Enjoy!

Canned beer makes its debut on this day in 1935. In partnership with the American Can Company, the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company delivered 2,000 cans of Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream Ale to faithful Krueger drinkers in Richmond, Virginia. Ninety-one percent of the drinkers approved of the canned beer, driving Krueger to give the green light to further production.

By the late 19th century, cans were instrumental in the mass distribution of foodstuffs, but it wasn’t until 1909 that the American Can Company made its first attempt to can beer. This was unsuccessful, and the American Can Company would have to wait for the end of Prohibition in the United States before it tried again. Finally in 1933, after two years of research, American Can developed a can that was pressurized and had a special coating to prevent the fizzy beer from chemically reacting with the tin.

The concept of canned beer proved to be a hard sell, but Krueger’s overcame its initial reservations and became the first brewer to sell canned beer in the United States. The response was overwhelming. Within three months, over 80 percent of distributors were handling Krueger’s canned beer, and Krueger’s was eating into the market share of the “big three” national brewers–Anheuser-Busch, Pabst and Schlitz. Competitors soon followed suit, and by the end of 1935, over 200 million cans had been produced and sold.

The purchase of cans, unlike bottles, did not require the consumer to pay a deposit. Cans were also easier to stack, more durable and took less time to chill. As a result, their popularity continued to grow throughout the 1930s, and then exploded during World War II, when U.S. brewers shipped millions of cans of beer to soldiers overseas. After the war, national brewing companies began to take advantage of the mass distribution that cans made possible, and were able to consolidate their power over the once-dominant local breweries, which could not control costs and operations as efficiently as their national counterparts.

Today, canned beer accounts for approximately half of the $20 billion U.S. beer industry. Not all of this comes from the big national brewers: Recently, there has been renewed interest in canning from microbrewers and high-end beer-sellers, who are realizing that cans guarantee purity and taste by preventing light damage and oxidation.

Mr. Beer offers several beer kits ranging in price from $49.95for the “premium” beer kit to $99.95for the “Brewmaster’s select” kit. The kits are available from a number of online merchants, often at discounted prices.

As is the case with most kits, Mr.Beer’s Brewmaster’s kit includes everything you need to brew and bottle 2 batches of premium all-malt beer (two gallons is the equivalent of about 21 bottles). Each batch makes 2 gallons of beer (equivalent to just over 21 bottles of beer). The basic kit contains

instructions and a brewer’s guide along with:
• 1 Two-Gallon Fermenter
• 2 Premium Brew Packs of Beer Ingredients
• 8 Bottles with Caps and Labels
• 1 Mr. Beer Baseball Cap and T-Shirt
• 2 Mr. Beer Pint Glasses
• 1 “Brew-o-meter” (a Thermometer)
• 1 “Sugar Measure” (a measuring tube)

If your budget permits, there are two upgraded kits in the Brewmaster’s series. The “Extra” includes everything above plus 2 additional all malt refills and a bottling system and is priced at $142.95. The “Ultimate: adds another 2 all malt refills (for a total of 6) a hop scales, a funnel with strainer and a measuring spoon and retails for $174.95. If you are a beginner just getting started the basic kit is sufficient to decide if this hobby is something you really want to pursue.

A highpoint of the Mr. Beer system is that it is very easy to use. If you follow the supplied instructions, it is practically impossible to make a bad batch.

The downside is that if you use one of the lower cost kits (the premium or premium select), the supplied ingredients aren’t of the highest quality. While they will produce a drinkable beer, the beer ingredients supplied with the Brewmaster’s kit are much better and will yield a far better beer.

The Beer Machine system makes your brew in a single container that acts as a fermenter, conditioning container, and dispenser.

There are two models of the Beer Machine available. The model 2000 for $114.95 and the BrewMaster model which prices out at $134.95.

Each Beer Machine 2000 beer kit includes:

• Custom pressure gauge to indicate brew quality, carbonation level, and dispensing pressure.
• Carbonation unit and pressure relief system for maintaining optimal brewing conditions.
• One Brewers Select premium beer mix, which makes 28 12 ounce beers.
• Yeast, CO2 bulbs and de-foamer disk
• Brewing Guide

If you’re looking for the easiest way to brew beer, this is it. There are but three steps to making beer with the Beer Machine:
1. Add water to the tank
2. Add one of their prepackaged beer mixes
3.Seal up the machine and wait for 7 to 10 days.

As you can tell, making beer at home with The Beer Machine is about as easy as making your morning coffee. At the end of the cycle you will have beer and it will be very drinkable but it won’t, in my opinion, be of the best possible quality.

As I see it, the Beer Machine is a great gift for someone who isn’t yet sure they want to invest time and effort but would like to to experiment with home beer brewing.

Currently, the The Beer Machine Model 2000 is available at the discounted price of $103.79 from Amazon.com.
The brewery was founded in 1862 by Thomas Cooper and is today Australia’s last remaining family owned brewery. Because Coopers is a viable brewery producing varieties of Pilsner, Dark Ale, Stout, and Lager, their brew kits rank among the best you can find. Coopers beer has been available in the U.S. since 1992 and the home brew kit has been in America since 1984.

Despite being designed and produced for home brew beginners, the Coopers brew kit mimics the “from scratch” brewing experience quite nicely. If you suspect that you will want to eventually grow beyond the restrictions of kit brewing into traditional brewing then this kit deserves serious consideration.
Interestingly, the Coopers kit allows you to make your beer six gallons at a time. While this may sound like a lot, you will be surprised how quickly it will go! Coopers DIY Beer Kit comes with an instructional booklet and DVD, as well as everything listed here:

1 30 Liter Fermenter with Lid and O-ring
1 Hydrometer and Measuring Flask
1 Sediment Reducer
1 “Little Bottler” tube and Bottling Valve
1 Tap
1 Airlock and Airlock Grommet
1 Thermometer
30 740ml Bottles and Caps
1 Coopers Lager Beer Kit Package
