The Process Of Home Beer Making

The Process Of Home Beer Making

If you aren’t yet familiar with the process of how to make your own beer you are probably wondering just how hard it really is. After all, if it’s a really involved process with a bunch of beer brewing equipment, mixing and boiling and all that, is it really worth the effort?

Well, those are fair questions. But, in reality, the process of brewing your own beer is not really all that difficult. While there are some cooking activities required like mixing and boiling, home brewing beer isn’t much different, or harder, than whipping up a batch of homemade chili or soup. And, once you have done it once or twice to get the process down, you will be able to pretty much do it in your sleep.

THE PROCESS
Put most simply, home brew beer is made by soaking some malted grains or other basic elements in water for a period of time much in the same way a cup of tea is made. When beer is made, it is usually about 5 gallons instead of a cup. Like tea, this boils for some time, and you can add hops and many other ingredients you might want to toss in there. Some brewers put in mashed fruit, or honey, or something else to give their beer a sweeter taste.

This is then transferred to what’s called a fermentation container and yeast is added to begin the fermentation process. Then close up this container and let it sit for several days. After that, the next step is strain the mix into a second container. This step is important because the liquid will now have some sediment and other stuff at the bottom, and you want only the pure liquid at this point.

Once the liquid is in what’s called the “secondary fermentation” container you will let it sit for several more days. Then, using a cooking thermometer and a little instrument called a hydrometer to check the alcohol content you will test the liquid and see if it’s done. When it is, you transfer it to bottles, and add some carbonation. Cap the bottles and presto! You have great tasting beer.

If you started reading this thinking that it was  just too complicated to brew your own beer, you can see that it really is not. Making home brew beer (or wine) is becoming one of the easiest and most enjoyable hobbies that people can pursue so don’t worry, so can you!
